THE ACTUAL POSITION OF THE REINFORCEMENT IN A CONCRETE STRUCTURE: AN INVESTIGATION BY MEASUREMENT

THE PURPOSE IS TO INVESTIGATE HOW REINFORCEMENT WORK IS CARRIED OUT AT DIFFERENT BUILDING SITES IN SWEDEN, AND TO WHAT EXTENT THE ACTUAL POSITION OF THE REINFORCEMENT IN THE STRUCTURE CORRESPONDS TO THAT STIPULATED BY THE DESIGN DRAWINGS. IT WAS FEARED THAT THE ACCELERATED WORKING PACE ETC. AT THE BUILDING SITES HAD RESULTED IN REDUCED ACCURACY OF REINFORCEMENT WORK. THE MEASUREMENT STUDIES HAVE PROVED THAT THESE MISGIVINGS WERE JUSTIFIED, AT LEAST AS REGARDS TO TOP REINFORCEMENT IN FLAT FLOOR SLABS AND REINFORCEMENT IN WALLS, WITH WHICH THE INVESTIGATION WAS PRIMARILY CONCERNED. DISCREPANCIES IN ERECTION WERE EVIDENT IN ALL CASES. TOP REINFORCEMENT OF STRAIGHT BARS, FOR EXAMPLE, HAD NO SUPPORT IN THE MIDDLE, PROJECTING RODS HAD BEEN BENT TO ONE SIDE TO FACILITATE ACCESSIBILITY OR TO PROVIDE SPACE FOR VIBRATOR RODS WHEN CONCRETING. /AUTHOR/
