BASALT AS AN AGGREGATE AND ITS INFLUENCE ON THE PROPERTIES OF CONCRETE WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO RESISTANCE TO DE-ICING SALT
A DESCRIPTION IS GIVEN OF INVESTIGATIONS CARRIED OUT ON KERBS AND FOOTPATHS INTO CAPILLARY WATER RETENTION CAPACITY AND CAPILLARY STEAM CONDENSATION. THE HARDENED CEMENT PASTE IN THE CONCRETE IS OPEN TO ATTACK BY DE-ICING SALT, BUT NOT THE CUBIC BASALT AGGREGATE, WHICH HAS SHOWN ITSELF TO BE SUPERIOR TO GRAVEL CONCRETE. ALTHOUGH RESISTANCE TO DE-ICING SALT IS NOT IDENTICAL TO FROST RESISTANCE AS DEFINED IN DIN 52104, IT CAN BE PREDICTED FROM THE RESULTS OF THE TESTS. RESISTANCE TO DE-ICING SALT IS HOWEVER IDENTICAL TO WEATHER RESISTANCE. THE DETERMINING FACTORS ARE THE CAPILLARY WATER RETENTION CAPACITY AND THE CAPILLARY STEAM CONDENSATION. THE MIX DESIGN, WATER CEMENT RATIO, COMPACTION AND POROSITY OF THE CONCRETE DETERMINE ITS QUALITY AND ITS RESISTANCE TO DE-ICING SALTS. /TRRL/
