ACCIDENTS AND SOCIETY
A SCIENTIFIC APPROACH TO THE PROBLEM OF ACCIDENTS IN SOCIETY IS CONSIDERED OF VITAL IMPORTANCE BOTH FROM A HUMANE AND ECONOMIC POINT OF VIEW. THIS WILL BEST BE ACHIEVED BY REGARDING THE EFFECTS OF ACCIDENTS ON MAN AS AN EPIDEMIC ILLNESS. AS A MEDICAL PROBLEM THIS DEMANDS A STUDY OF THE CAUSATIVE FACTORS. THESE INCLUDE "CHANCE" WHICH IS BEYOND MAN'S CONTROL, AND THE ENVIRONMENT, WHICH MAY BE NATURAL OR MODIFIED BY MAN'S EFFORTS TO EXTEND HIS SPHERE OF ACTIVITY. IN ADDITION THERE ARE THE ESSENTIALLY HUMAN FACTORS WHICH MAY INCREASE THE LIKELIHOOD OF ACCIDENT (ACCIDENT PRONENESS, RISK ACCEPTANCE, AND PHYSICAL DISABILITIES) AND THOSE WHICH WOULD LESSEN THE INCIDENCE (TRAINING, MATURITY, AND SAFETY MEASURES). THESE FACTORS, WHICH MAY BE INVOLVED SINGLY OR COOPERATIVELY, ARE DISCUSSED AND PRESENTED IN THE FORM OF AN EQUATION WHICH FURTHER REPRESENTS A CODE OF PRACTICE FOR SURVIVAL IN A HAZARDOUS MODERN SOCIETY. A NUMBER OF THE POINTS PRESENTED ARE ILLUSTRATED BY REFERENCE TO VEHICLE AND ROAD SAFETY. /AUTHOR/
