TIRES AND ROADS
TWO ASPECTS OF THE HIGHWAY SAFETY PROBLEM THAT HAVE RECEIVED INCREASED ATTENTION BY ENGINEERS RECENTLY RELATE TO THE REGULARITY OF TIRE-ROAD FRICTION AND THE DYNAMIC BEHAVIOR OF THE VEHICLE. SOME STUDIES FOCUS UPON THE SLIPPERINESS OR SKID RESISTANCE OF HIGHWAYS. HIGHWAYS ARE EVALUATED BY SEVERAL METHODS, AS ARE TIRES. THE CHALLENGE BEFORE THE HIGHWAY ENGINEER IS TO SELL THE NEED FOR HIGH SKID RESISTANCE OF ROADS TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC. THERE WILL BE FURTHER DEVELOPMENTS IN ANTISKID BRAKING SYSTEMS, PARTICULARLY FOR LARGE TRUCKS. /AUTHOR/
