THE AUTHORS RECALL THE COMPLEXITY OF THE TECHNICAL AND ECONOMICAL ASPECTS OF THE MECHANICAL PREPARATION OF AGGREGATES. A STUDY IS PRESENTED OF THE CHARACTERISTICS AND ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF PRIMARY JAW CRUSHERS, WHICH REPRESENT THE MOST FLEXIBLE TYPE OF MACHINE. THEIR ONLY DRAWBACKS COME TO THE FORE WHEN A HIGH HOURLY OUTPUT IS REQUIRED (IN WHICH CASE A GYRATORY CONE-TYPE CRUSHER IS TO BE PREFERRED), AND WHEN THE MATERIAL TREATED IN NON-OR SLIGHTLY-ABRASIVE LIMESTONE (THE HAMMER GRINDER SHOULD THEN BE USED). PRIMARY JAW CRUSHERS AFFORD THE FOLLOWING ADVANTAGES: (1) HIGH OUTPUT; (2) POSSIBILITY OF DIRECT SUPPLY; (3) IMPORTANT REDUCTION QUOTIENT. (4) LOW WEAR; (5) (5) FOR EQUAL OUTPUT, LOWER ENGINE POWER. HAMMER GRINDERS ARE BASED ON A PRINCIPLE DIFFERENT OF THAT OF OTHER GRINDERS , FOR IT BRINGS INTO PLAY THE RESISTANCE TO SHOCKS OF THE MATERIAL TREATED AND NOT ITS COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH, BUT THEY ARE SENSITIVE TO THE ABRASIVENESS OF THE MATERIAL AND DO NOT HANDLE WELL STICKY OR WET MATERIAL, THEY HAVE A VERY HIGH REDUCTION RATIO (1/10), AND HIGH OUTPUT; THEY DO NOT REQUIRE LARGE-SCALE FOUNDATIONS, CONSUME LITTLE ENERGY, AND PRODUCE CUBIC MATERIALS. BECAUSE OF THESE ADVANTAGES, THEY ARE INCREASINGLY USED. THIS LED TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF EQUIPMENT BASED ON THE SAME PRINCIPLE BUT WHICH CAN BE EMPLOYED DIFFERENTLY. THESE NEW TYPES OF EQUIPMENT ARE BRIEFLY REVIEWED (DRYER-CRUSHER, COMPOUND CRUSHER, HAMMER CRUSHER FOR ABRASIVE ROCKS SUCH AS SILICA-LIMESTONE PEBBLES AND BASALT). DETAILS ARE ALSO GIVEN OF PRIMARY CORRUGATED CRUSHING ROLLS AND THEIR ADVANTAGES, AND OF VARIOUS TYPES AND MAKES OF CRUSHING EQUIPMENT.
