ADVANCES IN LIGHTING ROADWAYS. INTERCHANGES AND TOLL PLAZAS ROADWAY LIGHTING ON TOLL BRIDGES. HIGH PRESSURE SODIUM ROADWAY LIGHTING ON THE DALLAS NORTH TOLLWAY

A MODIFICATION IS DESCRIBED OF AN EXISTING LIGHTING SYSTEM ON THE MATHEWS BRIDGE ACROSS THE ST. JOHNS RIVER IN JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA. THE LIGHTING SYSTEM ORIGINALLY CONSISTED OF ONE 6.6 MP SERIES CIRCUIT ON EACH SIDE SERVING FORTY-NINE 6000 LUMEN FILAMENT TYPE LUMINAIRES PER SIDE. THESE LUMINAIRES WERE ARRANGED IN OPPOSITE POSITIONS WITH APPROXIMATELY 150 FT. SPACING. THE ADVANCE IN LIGHTING WAS ACCOMPLISHED PRIMARILY BY CHANGING FROM A FILAMENT TYPE TO A CLEAR MERCURY-VAPOR TYPE LUMINAIRE. THE LIGHTING IS DESCRIBED FOR SEVEN TOLL BRIDGES IN OPERATION BY THE CALIFORNIA DIVISION OF BAY TOLL CROSSINGS. A LOW-MOUNTED CONTINUOUS LIGHTING SYSTEM WAS USED FOR THE NEW SAN MATEO- HAYWARD BRIDGE. THE BRIDGE LIGHTING CONSISTS OF APPROXIMATELY 7,000 TEN-FOOT FLUORESCENT FIXTURERS MOUNTED END TO END, AND BACK TO BACK, ON THE CONCRETE MEDIAN BARRIER THAT SEPARATES THE TWO BRIDGE ROADWAYS. THE OPTIC LENS PRINCIPLE IS UTILIZED TO CONTROL AND DISTRIBUTE THE LIGHT ACROSS THE ROADWAY. A CARPET OF LIGHT IS EVENLY DISTRIBUTED OVER THE TWO OR THREE LANES OF ROADWAY WITH A CUTOFF HEIGHT WHICH PRODUCES A MINIMUM OF GLARE. THE AVERAGE BRIGHTNESS AT THE ROADWAY LEVEL IS MAINTAINED AT ABOUT ONE-HALF FOOT LAMBERT. THE NEW SAN DIEGO-CORONADO BRIDGE WILL BE LIGHTED WITH HIGH PRESSURE SODIUM VAPOR TYPES OF LUMINAIRES. THESE WILL BE ON A DAVIT TYPE POLE WITH A MOUNTING HEIGHT AT 40 FEET ABOVE THE ROADWAY. ROADWAY INSET LIGHTING IS USED AT THE CORONADO TOLL PLAZA, AT THE TOLL BOOTH STRUCTURE AND AROUND THE ROADWAY PERIMETERS. THERE WILL BE NO OVERHEAD LIGHTING. ECONOMIC STUDIES FOR THE DALLAS NORTH NORTH TOLLWAY WERE MADE OF THE RELATIVE COSTS OF INSTALLING AND OPERATING A MERCURY VAPOR LIGHTING SYSTEM AND THE LUCALOX SYSTEM DEVELOPED BY THE GENERAL ELECTRIC COMPANY THE SYSTEM DEVELOPED BY THE GENERAL ELECTRIC COMPANY. THE LUCALOX SYSTEM WHICH USES A HIGH PRESSURE SODIUM LAMP WAS FOUND TO BE LESS COSTLY AND WOULD PROVIDE A WARM LIGHT OF PLEASING QUALITY THAT THE NEIGHBORS FIND LESS OBJECTIONABLE THAN THE BLUE MERCURY VAPOR. COLORS UNDER THE GOLDEN SODIUM LIGHTS SEEM TO BE NEARER THEIR NATURAL HUE THAN THOSE VIEWED UNDER MERCURY VAPOR LIGHTS. THE MOUNTING HEIGHT OF ROADWAY LIGHTS ON THE TOLLWAY WERE SET AT 35 FEET. GLARE SHIELDS WERE INSTALLED ON LUMINAIRES IN RESIDENTIAL AREAS WHICH REDUCED THE GLARE BY REDUCING THE AMOUNT OF BRIGHT GLASSWARE VISIBLE TO THE MOTORISTS AND THE NEIGHBORS.
