INNOVATIVE LIGHTING PROPOSED FOR RURAL INTERCHANGE
IN THE CONTINUING SEARCH FOR IMPROVED METHODS OF ILLUMINATING THE NATION'S HIGHWAYS, THE "NEW" APPROACH IS THE USE OF HIGHER LUMEN LAMPS AND MOUNTING THE LUMINAIRE 100 FEET OR MORE ABOVE THE ROADWAY. THIS IS ACCOMPLISHED BY MOUNTING THREE OR FOUR OR MORE 1000-WATT LUMINAIRES ON A TOWER, THE TOWER BEING A SINGLE TAPERED STEEL POLE. A SYSTEM OF THIS DESIGN HAS BEEN PROPOSED FOR THE PENNSYLVANIA DEPARTMENT OF HIGHWAYS TO BE INSTALLED AT THE STATE ROUTE 18 INTERCHANGE WITH THE BEAVER VALLEY EXPRESSWAY. THE TOWER LIGHTING INSTALLATION PRESENTLY IN THE FINAL STAGES OF DESIGN WILL HAVE 15 100-FOOT TOWERS WITH THREE OR FOUR 1,000 WATT CLEAR MERCURY LUMINAIRES ON EACH TOWER. TO ACHIEVE THE LIGHTING OF THIS INTERCHANGE SOLELY BY THE USE OF THE CONVENTIONAL 400 WATT LUMINAIRES WOULD HAVE TAKEN 110 LUMINAIRES MOUNTED AT THIRTY FEET. THE ESTIMATED INSTALLED COST FOR THE CONVENTIONAL SYSTEM WAS $165,000 AS COMPARED TO $170,000 FOR THE TOWER LIGHTING INSTALLATION. ENERGY COST FOR THE TOWER INSTALLATION IS ABOUT 10 PERCENT GREATER THAN THE CONVENTIONAL SYSTEM. IT HAS BEEN ESTIMATED THAT WITH TOWERS, MAINTENANCE COSTS WILL AVERAGE 25 PERCENT BELOW THAT TO BE EXPECTED WITH THE CONVENTIONAL SYSTEM.
