PEDESTRIAN VISIBILITY WITH AND WITHOUT GLARE AND THE PEDESTRIANS ESTIMATE OF HIS OWN VISIBILITY

ACTUAL PEDESTRIANS AND CARS WERE INVOLVED IN MORE THAN 1700 OBSERVATIONS TO TEST THE ACTUAL PEDESTRIAN VISIBILITY IN COMPARISON TO THE PEDESTRIAN'S ESTIMATE OF HIS OWN PERSONAL VISIBILITY. ONLY ONE OUT OF 26 PEDESTRIANS ESTIMATED HIS ACTUAL VISIBILITY OF 175 FEET. ALL OTHERS ESTIMATED THEIR VISIBILITY AS UP TO THREE TIMES BETTER THAN IT ACTUALLY WAS. THE AVERAGE PEDESTRIAN BELIEVED HE WAS VISIBLE AT 343 FEET. ACTUAL PEDESTRIAN VISIBILITY WAS ENHANCED FROM ABOUT 175 FEET FOR NORMAL DARK COLORED MEN'S CLOTHING TO 790 FEET BY THE ADDITION OF REFLECTORIZATION. BLACK CLOTHING SEEN AGAINST HEAD LIGHT GLARE HAD A VISIBILITY DISTANCE OF 167 FEET WHILE REFLECTORIZED CLOTHING SEEN AGAINST GLARE HAD A VISIBILITY DISTANCE OF 680 FEET. A 1" FABRIC RETROREFLECTIVE TAPE AROUND THE ARM AND AROUND THE COAT COLLARS WAS USED. ITS REFLECTANCE PER UNIT WAS ABOUT 50 CANDLES/FT 2/FT CANDLE OF ILLUMINATION, OR ABOUT THE SAME PER UNIT AREA AS A NEW REFLECTORIZED LICENSE PLATE. /AUTHOR/
