TV PLUS DRIVE CONTROLS IMPROVE QUALITY OF OPERATOR TRAINING

A TRAFFIC SIMULATOR WITH A WRAP-AROUND SCREEN PLUS REAR-VIEW MIRRORS IS CUTTING DRIVER-TRAINING TIME, REDUCING TRAINING COSTS, AND LOWERING THE NUMBER OF TEACHERS AND PRACTICE CARS NEEDED. THE WHEELS OF THE FRONT-END ASSEMBLY OF A DAF ARMY TRUCK REST ON ROLLERS MOUNTED ON A TURNTABLE SO STEERING, ACCELERATION/DECELERATION, BRAKING, AND OTHER CONTROL FUNCTIONS RESULT IN THE SAME RESPONSES FOR THE TRAINEE THAT HE WILL LATER EXPERIENCE IN THE OVER-THE-ROAD DRIVING. TRAFFIC SITUATIONS VIEWED BY THE TRAINEE ARE CAREFULLY CREATED ILLUSIONS, BASED ON A 1:25 SCALE MODEL OF A SYSTEM OF MODEL STREETS, COMPLETE WITH OTHER VEHICLES, PEDESTRIANS, BUILDINGS, AND TRAFFIC CIRCLES. THROUGH A LINK WITH THE TV IN THE PANTOGRAPHIC BOOM IN THE MODEL OF THE TOWN, THE TRAINEE VIEWS THE MODEL AS AN IMAGE PROJECTED ON A SCREEN IN FRONT OF HIM. THE INSTRUCTOR IS ABOVE THE MODEL SO HE CAN FOLLOW ITS MOVEMENTS. A TV MONITOR IN THE CONTROL PANEL IN FRONT OF HIM PRESENTS THE SAME SCENE THE TRAINEE IS VIEWING. THE INSTRUCTOR CAN SET UP VARIOUS TRAFFIC SITUATIONS AND REMOTELY CONTROL SOME VEHICLES IN THE MODEL.
