NEW SYSTEMS DESIGNED TO REDUCE HIGHWAY HAZARDS

THE BUREAU OF PUBLIC ROADS' 4S PROGRAM (STRUCTURAL SYSTEMS IN SUPPORT OF SAFETY) WAS ESTABLISHED IN ORDER TO DEVELOP NEW DEVICES AND CONCEPTS TO REDUCE THE FREQUENCY AND SEVERITY OF SINGLE VEHICLE ACCIDENTS AT PROBLEM LOCATIONS. THE PROGRAM HAS IDENTIFIED AN ARRAY OF SOLUTIONS AND FEASIBILITY STUDIES ARE IN PROGRESS. THESE STUDIES EMPHASIZE THE UTILIZATION OF EXISTING TECHNOLOGY IN THEIR SOLUTIONS. THEY MAY BE CLASSIFIED AS FOLLOWS: DEVELOPMENT OF NEW TYPES OF CABLE SUPPORTED STRUCTURES THAT ELIMINATE THE NEED FOR RIGID SUPPORTS CLOSE TO THE HIGHWAY EDGE; DEVELOPMENT OF IMPACT ENERGY ABSORPTION BARRIERS TO REDUCE THE SEVERITY OF HIGH SPEED, NEAR HEAD-ON COLLISIONS WITH ROADSIDE OBSTACLES; DEVELOPMENT OF NEW TYPE OF REDUCTIONAL BARRIERS TO HANDLE GLANCING IMPACTS; AND DEVELOPMENT OF VEHICLE ENTRAPMENT DEVICES FOR USE WHERE VEHICLE REDIRECTION MIGHT ENDANGER OTHER PERSONS IN THE AREA. /AUTHOR/
