RESEARCHING CRASHWORTHY EQUIPMENT FOR AUTOMOBILE ACCIDENT PREVENTION
IN THIS DISCUSSION OF THE MAJOR CAUSES OF AUTOMOBILE ACCIDENTS AND INJURIES, IT IS APPARENT THAT AN OPERATIONAL ANALYSIS OFFERS PROMISE FOR HIGHLIGHTING MANY OF THE MAJOR PROBLEMS. IT IS APPARENT THAT THE LARGEST PERCENTAGE OF FATALITIES OCCUR TO THOSE IN THE YOUNGER AGE RANGES, WITH YOUNG MALES PREDOMINATING. THE ROLE OF EXCESSIVE DRINKING IS PROVING TO BE OF GREAT SIGNIFICANCE PARTICULARLY IN SINGLE CAR FATAL ACCIDENTS. MUCH REMAINS TO BE DONE IN UNDERSTANDING THE ROLE OF DISEASE AND ILLNESS IN AUTOMOBILE ACCIDENTS, AND MORE RELIABLE CRITERIA FOR DISQUALIFICATION ARE URGENTLY NEEDED FOR LICENSING AUTHORITIES. IN REGARD TO PATTERNS OF INJURY, SEVERAL FINDINGS MAY BE HIGHLIGHTED: PATTERNS OF INJURY ARE EMERGING IN RELATION TO THE SEAT OCCUPIED IN THE CAR AND THE INTERIOR STRUCTURES IMPACTED BY THE BODY; MULTIPLE INJURIES ARE MOST LIKELY TO OCCUR, WITH THE HEAD BEING THE MOST VULNERABLE; THE ULTIMATE GOAL OF RESEARCH IN THIS AREA IS TO PREVENT THE INJURIES AND FATALITIES THROUGH THE DESIGN OF CRASHWORTHY EQUIPMENT. /AUTHOR/
