EFFECTS OF PAINT CHANNELIZATION ON ACCIDENTS

THE EFFECTIVENESS IS DETERMINED OF PAINT CHANNELIZATION (LEFT-TURN STORAGE POCKETS AND MEDIANS) ON A 1.14 MILE SECTION OF WILSHIRE BOULEVARD, A TYPICAL URBAN ARTERIAL, IN LOS ANGELES. THE BOULEVARD WAS DIVIDED INTO THREE SECTIONS. THE TRAFFIC ACCIDENT EXPERIENCE IS COMPARED BEFORE AND AFTER PAINT CHANNELIZATION IN ONE STUDY SECTION. TWO OTHER ADJACENT SECTIONS OF THE STREET, ONE CHANNELIZED AND ONE NOT, WERE CHOSEN AS THE TWO EXPERIMENTAL CONTROL SECTIONS. THESE SECTIONS ARE DIAGRAMED IN THE STUDY. BASED ON A STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF THE ACCIDENT EXPERIENCE FOR THE TWO PATTERNS OF STRIPING, THE FOLLOWING CONCLUSIONS CAN BE REACHED: (1.) ON THE EXPERIMENTAL CONTROL SECTIONS THE DIFFERENCES WITHIN EACH SECTION IN INJURY ACCIDENT RATES DURING THE BEFORE AND AFTER CHANNELIZATION PERIODS WERE NOT STATISTICALLY SIGNIFICANT. (2.) ON THE STUDY SECTION THE REDUCTION IN INJURY ACCIDENT RATE AND THE REDUCTION IN THE NUMBER OF REAR-END AND LEFT TURN ACCIDENTS WERE STATISTI- CALLY SIGNIFICANT, WHICH IS DUE TO THE CHANGE IN STRIPING PATTERN. AND (3.) PAINTED MEDIAN CHANNELIZATION, WITH LEFT TURN STORAGE POCKETS AT INTERSECTIONS, CAN BE A SIGNIFICANT FACTOR IN REDUCING INJURY ACCIDENT RATES ON URBAN ARTERIAL STREETS.
