UNIFORM FORMAT AND CODES FOR NEW YORK AND CALIFORNIA TRAFFIC ACCIDENT DATA. FINAL REPORT
CALIFORNIA AND NEW YORK HAVE COLLECTED AND PLACED ON MAGNETIC TAPE INFORMATION CONCERNING SEVERAL MILLION MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENTS. THE FORMATS AND CODING MANUALS BY WHICH THESE DATA ARE DEFINED ON TAPE VARY BOTH FROM YEAR TO YEAR WITHIN EACH STATE AND ALSO BETWEEN STATES. TO ALLEVIATE THE PROBLEM THIS PRESENTS IN COMPUTER PROCESSING, METHODS HAVE BEEN DEVISED TO PROCESS THE VARIED INPUT DATA AND TO TRANSFORM THEM INTO OUTPUT DATA DEFINED BY A SINGLE UNIFORM FORMAT AND UNIFORM CODING MANUAL. THE INPUT DATA ARE DESCRIBED IN DETAIL INCLUDING A LIST OF PERMISSIBLE VALUES FOR EACH ITEM OF INFORMATION. THE UNIFORM OUTPUT FORMAT IS GIVEN AND A CODING MANUAL DESCRIBES EACH OF THE 75 VARIABLES ON THE FORMAT. PROCEDURES FOR TRANSFORMING THE INPUT DATA TO THE OUTPUT DATA ARE PROVIDED IN A SET OF TABLES, ONE FOR EACH OF THE 75 VARIABLES ON THE UNIFORM FORMAT. FINALLY, COMPUTER PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS ARE GIVEN FOR SEVERAL STATISTICAL TECHNIQUES PARTICULARLY USEFUL FOR ANALYSIS OF ACCIDENT DATA. VOLUME 2 CONTAINS TABLES DEFINING INPUT AND OUTPUT DATA, TABLES FOR TRANSFORMING INPUT TO OUTPUT DATA, AND STATISTICAL PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS. DATA FROM STATES OTHER THAN NEW YORK AND CALIFORNIA CAN BE INCORPORATED INTO THE PROGRAM. /AUTHOR/
