PRESENT AND FUTURE TRAFFIC ACCIDENT RECORDS SYSTEM IN NEW YORK STATE'S EFFORT TO COMPLY WITH FEDERAL STANDARDS
THE FEDERAL STANDARD FOR TRAFFIC RECORDS SPECIFIES THAT THE INFORMATION GATHERED 'SHALL BE COMPATIBLE FOR PURPOSES OF ANALYSIS AND CORRELATION'. EIGHT CLASSES OF DATA ARE TO BE GATHERED VIA THE VEHICLE REGISTRATION SYSTEM, FIVE OF WHICH MUST BE 'MACHINE OPERATIONAL'. THREE VERY BROAD CLASSES OF DATA ARE TO BE COLLECTED VIA DRIVER LICENSING OF WHICH FIVE OPERATIONAL CATAGORIES MUST BE DEVELOPED. THIS ARTICLE DESCRIBES THE SYSTEM BEING DEVELOPED BY THE STATE OF NEW YORK TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS. IT DISCUSSES THE PROBLEMS WHICH HAVE COME UP AND THE SOLUTIONS WHICH ARE BEING TRIED.
