DEVELOPMENT OF A METHOD OF PREDICTING HIGH-ACCIDENT AND VIOLATION DRIVERS

THIS RESEARCH HAS BEEN CARRIED OUT TO TEST THE HYPOTHESIS THAT DRIVERS WITH DIFFERENT DRIVING HISTORIES (THE HIGH- ACCIDENT, THE LOW-ACCIDENT, THE HIGH-VIOLATOR, AND THE BEGINNING DRIVER) EXHIBIT MEASURABLY DIFFERENT CHARACTERISTICS WHEN TESTED ON THE SAME ROUTE IN AN INSTRUMENTED CAR. THE DEVICE USED IN COLLECTING DATA, CALLED A DRIVOMETER, RECORDS IN DIGITAL FORM: (1) DRIVER CONTROL ACTIONS, (2) VEHICLE MOTIONS, AND (3) TRAFFIC EVENTS. THE MEASUREMENTS WERE TAKEN OVER A ROUTE OF APPROXIMATLEY 17 MI. AND REVEALED SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE POPULATIONS AND RELIABILITY IN INDIVIDUAL PREDICTION OF ABOUT 2 IN 3. CONSIDERING THE CHANCE FACTOR INVOLVED IN DRIVING RISKS, THIS TECHNIQUE OFFERS AN IMPORTANT STEP IN DRIVER TESTING. /AUTHOR/
