INFLUENCE OF LIGHTING ON COST OF ROAD ACCIDENTS

THE ENGINEERS OF URBAN AUTHORITIES IN DEALING WITH LIGHTING SCHEMES IN THEIR AREAS HAVE LONG BEEN AWARE OF THE CONTRIBUTION THAT GOOD LIGHTING CAN MAKE TO THE REDUCTION OF ACCIDENTS AND OF THE ECONOMIC BENEFITS THAT CAN ARISE. THE RESULTS OF A RECENT VEHICLE ACCIDENT COST STUDY WILL BE OF PARTICULAR INTEREST TO THEM. THE MAIN OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY WAS TO DETERMINE COSTS OF ACCIDENTS AND OTHER INCIDENTS IN THE WASHINGTON, D. C. METROPOLITAN AREA IN WHICH MOTOR VEHICLES REGISTERED IN THE STUDY AREA WERE INVOLVED, AND THE COST WAS FOUND TO EXCEED $75 MILLION DURING THE TWELVE-MONTH PERIOD OF THE STUDY. THE CONCLUSIONS TO BE DRAWN FROM THE REPORT NOT ONLY PROVIDE CONFIRMATION THAT ROAD LIGHTING REDUCES BOTH ACCIDENTS AND COSTS, BUT ALSO THAT THE EXISTING LIGHTING ON ROADS AND STREETS IN THE WASHINGTON METROPOLITAN AREA IS SAVING MORE THAN $15 MILLION A YEAR IN DIRECT COSTS OF ACCIDENTS, AND THAT TRAFFIC ACCIDENT COSTS MAY BE REDUCED BY ANOTHER $5 MILLION A YEAR IF LIGHTING IS INSTALLED ON THOSE ROADS AND STREETS THAT SO FAR HAVE NOT BEEN PROVIDED WITH A LIGHTING SYSTEM. /AUTHOR/
