THE FEASIBILITY OF HOLOGRAPHIC TRAFFIC SIGNS
FORSTER'S PROPOSAL FOR A SYSTEM OF HOLOGRAPHIC TRAFFIC SIGNS IS EXAMINED FROM A TECHNICAL POINT OF VIEW. THE PROPOSAL DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE FEASIBLE IN DAYLIGHT CONDITIONS OR AT NIGHT ON WELL-LIT ROADS, AT LEAST IN THE FORESEEABLE TECHNOLOGICAL FUTURE. FURTHER RESEARCH IS SUGGESTED IN THE AREAS OF (1) THE VISIBILITY OF MONOCHROMATIC LIGHT AGAINST A POLYCHROMATIC BACKGROUND; AND (2) THE EFFICIENCY OF THICK PHASE HOLOGRAMS AND THEIR IMAGE RECONSTRUCTION USING INCOHERENT LIGHT. /RRL(A)/
