HIGHWAY HAZARDS: THE BLATNIK SUBCOMMITTEE HAS BEEN TAKING A LONG, HARD LOOK AT DANGEROUS INSTALLATIONS ALONG HIGHWAYS
CAUSES OF HIGHWAY ACCIDENTS ARE ANALYZED FROM THE ASPECTS OF GEOMETRIC DESIGN, STANDARDS, AND HIGHWAY SIGNS. ACCIDENT CAUSES IN THE AREA OF THE 70-S INTERCHANGE ON THE WASHINGTON BELTWAY WERE ANALYZED. THREE QUARTERS OF THE ACCIDENTS WERE CAUSED BY VEHICLES RUNNING THE ROAD, THE SINGLE CAR ACCIDENT. THREE QUARTERS OF THESE CARS LEAVING THE HIGHWAY HIT SOMETHING CAUSING HIGH IMPACT ACCIDENTS AND DEATH.
