ALCOHOL AND TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS' CAN THE GORDIAN KNOT BE BROKEN{
SEVERAL STUDIES USING ADEQUATE RESEARCH TECHNIQUES HAVE SHOWN THAT A DEFINITE RELATIONSHIP EXISTS AMONG HIGH BLOOD ALCOHOL LEVEL, DECREASED ABILITY TO PERFORM THE DRIVING TASK, AND THE OCCURRENCE OF TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS INVOLVING VEHICLES ALONE OR VEHICLES AND PEDESTRIANS. A GROWING BODY OF DATA SUGGESTS THAT PERSONS SUFFERING FROM CHRONIC ALCOHOLISM MAY PLAY A MUCH LARGER ROLE IN THE TRAFFIC ACCIDENT TOLL THAN WAS PREVIOUSLY THOUGHT. POOR DRIVER TRAINING, INADEQUACIES OF VEHICLE AND ROAD DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION, AND INSUFFICIENT FIRST AID FURTHER COMPOUND THE EFFECTS OF DRUNK DRIVING.
