TECHNICAL ASPECTS OF VIBRATING ROLLERS IN RELATION TO PERFORMANCE
THE VARIOUS COMPONENTS OF VIBRATING ROLLERS ARE DESCRIBED AND ILLUSTRATED AND CONSIDERATION IS GIVEN TO THEIR FUNCTION AND DESIGN. THE MORE IMPORTANT DESIGN VARIABLES ARE DEFINED AND DISCUSSED ALONG WITH COMMON METHODS OF THEIR DETERMINA- TION AND MEASUREMENT. THE IMPORTANCE OF THE INTER-RELATION OF THESE VARIABLES IS STRESSED. A DESCRIPTION OF HOW COMPACTION IS ACHIEVED BY THESE ROLLERS IS GIVEN AND THE INFLUENCE OF THE DESIGN VARIABLES ON COMPACTION IS EXPLAINED. EXISTING METHODS OF PERFORMANCE EVALUATION ARE REVIEWED AND A SUGGESTED BASIS FOR A MORE ACCURATE METHOD IS GIVEN. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT A THEORETICAL EVALUATION OF A ROLLER COMPACTION EFFECT COULD BE OBTAINED IN THE FUTURE BY CONSIDERING THE DESIGN VARIABLES IN RELATION TO THE RESULTS OF FIELD TESTS. /RRL/
