DISTRICT 25 DEVELOPS POST DRIVER
A MACHINE BASED ON DROP HAMMER PRINCIPLES HAS BEEN DEVISED TO DRIVE IN HIGHWAY DELINEATOR POSTS. BASICALLY IT CONSISTS OF A 40-LB HAMMER RAISED 20 IN. AND DROPPED ONTO THE DRIVING CAP OF THE POST. THE HAMMER IS RAISED AND DROPPED BY A SNATCH BLOCK ACTIVATED BY A CABLE SECURED TO A 20-IN FLYWHEEL. THE FLYWHEEL IS DRIVEN BY A SMALL PETROL ENGINE. IT TAKES THREE MINUTES AND ABOUT 150 STROKES TO DRIVE AN 8-FT POST TO A DEPTH OF 3 1/2FT. TEST DRIVING IN BASE MATERIAL HAS PROVED SATISFACTORY. /RRL/
