MANAGEMENT SYSTEM SAVES HIGHWAY MAINTENANCE DOLLARS
UNTIL RECENTLY, HIGHWAY MAINTENANCE COSTS IN LOUISIANA WERE INCREASING BY $4 TO $5 MILLION A YEAR. IN 1969, A MANAGEMENT PROGRAM WAS IMPLEMENTED STATEWIDE. AN ANNUAL WORK PLAN SEEKS TO PROVIDE THE BEST POSSIBLE MAINTENANCE AT THE LOWEST COST. EACH PARISH IN THE STATE HAS AN INDIVIDUAL WORK PLAN, WHICH INCLUDES STANDARD UNIT COSTS FOR EACH QUANTITY. AN ATTRITION PLAN HAS REDUCED THE NUMBER OF WORKERS AND INCREASED THE TOTAL PRODUCTIVITY. /CE-ASCE/
