FREDERICK COUNTY DEVELOPS ROAD WIDENING PROGRAM
FREDERICK COUNTY IN MARYLAND HAS ABOUT 1000 MILES OF COUNTRY ROADS, ABOUT HALF OF WHICH UNTIL RECENTLY WERE 12 FEET WIDE. DURING FY 1971 ABOUT 15 MILES OF THESE ROADS WERE WIDENED AND STRENGTHENED. WIDENING TO 20 FEET CONSISTS OF PLACING A 4-INCH BITUMINOUS CONCRETE BASE ON THE SUBGRADE, BRINGING THE TOP OF THE WIDENING NEARLY FLUSH WITH THE EDGE OF THE EXISTING ROAD AND THEN GOING OUT FOUR FEET ON EITHER SIDE. THE ROAD IS STRENGTHENED BY OVERLAYING THE OLD ROAD AND THE WIDENING WITH TWO INCHES OF BITUMINOUS CONCRETE.
