STATE ROAD MAINTENANCE IS A COMPLEX OPERATION
MAINTENANCE OF A STATE HIGHWAY SYSTEM HAS BEEN COMPLICATED NOT ONLY BY THE MUCH GREATER NUMBER OF VEHICLES ON THE ROAD BUT ALSO BY MORE COMPLEX HIGHWAYS AND STRUCTURES THAT REQUIRE NOVEL TECHNIQUES, EQUIPMENT,AND PROGRAMS. VEGETATION FOR EROSIN CONTROL AND BEAUTIFICATION MUST BE CULTIVATED AND TRIMMED, LITTER HAS TO BE PICKED UP, LINE MARKINGS MUST BE RENEWED REGULARLY, THE EVER-INCREASING NUMBER OF LIGHTING UNITS MUST BE CHECKED AND MAINTAINED, PAVEMENTS MUST BE RESURFACED AND REHABILITATED REGULARLY TO ENSURE RIDE QUALITY. A DESCRIPTION IS GIVEN OF THE ADMINISTRATIVE MEANS EMPLOYED BY THE MARYLAND STATE ROADS COMMISSION TO ACCOMPLISH THESE AND OTHER MAINTENANCE TASKS, FOR WHICH OVER $23 MILLION ARE SPENT ANNUALLY.
