COMPUTER PROGRAM CUTS COST OF URBAN SOLID WASTE COLLECTION
NEWLY DEVELOPED COMPUTER PROGRAMS ARE DESCRIBED WHICH ARE SAID TO BE ABLE TO CUT SOLID WASTE COLLECTION COST THROUGH IMPROVED VEHICLE SCHEDULING AND ROUTING. THE PROGRAMS (CALLED RAGS FOR ROUTE ANALYSIS, GENERATION, AND SIMULATION) PRODUCES AN AREA WIDE PLAN OF INDIVIDUALLY BALANCED COLLECTION ROUTES ON A STREET-BY-STREET, HOUSE TO HOUSE BASIS. THE COMPUTER OUTPUT IS A DETAILED ROUTE DESCRIPTION. IF A COMPUTER DRIVEN PLOTTER IS AVAILABLE, THE PROGRAM WILL PLOT EACH ROUTE ON A SCALED PHOTOMAP OR ORDINARY MAP. WHERE NO COMPUTER DRIVEN PLOTTER IS USED, A VERBAL DESCRIBTION OF EACH ROUTE IS DEVELOPED BY THE COMPUTER PRINTER. THE PRINTED DESCRIPTION IS EASILY TRANSFORMED INTO A ROUTE MAP BY A DRAFTSMAN. ANOTHER PROGRAM ACCEPTS THE ROUTE GENERATED BY THE COMPUTER AND SIMULATES THE OPERATION OF COLLECTION VEHICLES OVER THEM; IT SIMULATES THE SIMULTANEOUS OPERATION OF ALL COLLECTION VEHICLES TO PREDICT VEHICLE INTERACTION (SUCH AS QUEUEING AT TRANSFER OR DISPOSAL POINTS); GENERATES STATISTICAL DATA ON REFUSE QUANTITIES AND ROUTE MILEAGES; AND CHANGES IN OPERATING CONDITIONS, EQUIPMENT OR METHODS. LICENSING ARRANGEMENTS ARE AVAILABLE FROM OWEN AND WHITE INC., BATON ROUGE, LOUISIANA.
