THE FORMATION AND TREATMENT OF ICE ON ROAD SURFACES
RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN TWO METHODS OF TREATING ICE AND SNOW ON ROAD SURFACES ARE DISCUSSED: CHEMICAL TREATMENT AND ROAD HEATING. THE PRINCIPLES OF CHEMICAL TREATMENT ARE REVIEWED AND METEOROLOGICAL FACTORS ATTENDING ICE FORMATION AND SNOWFALL ARE DISCUSSED IN RELATION TO THE QUANTITIES OF CHEMICAL REQUIRED. THE EQUIPMENT USED FOR CHEMICAL TREATMENT OF ICY ROAD SURFACES IS DESCRIBED. DISLOCATION OF TRAFFIC FLOW DUE TO THE DIFFICULTY OF NEGOTIATING QUITE SMALL GRADIENTS IN ICY CONDITIONS CAN BE PREVENTED BY HEATING CRITICAL AREAS OF THE ROAD. VARIOUS TYPES OF HEATING INSTALLATION ARE DESCRIBED, AND METEOROLOGICAL FACTORS WHICH NEED TO BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT IN CALCULATING HEAT REQUIRE- MENTS ARE DISCUSSED. /AUTHOR/
