NEW BRIDGES FOUNDED ON OLD

IN RECONSTRUCTING AND WIDENING THREE OLD BRIDGES IN CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA, $2 MILLION WAS SAVED BY USING THE ORIGINAL CONCRETE PIERS AND ARCHES. IN PLACES THE HALF CENTURY-OLD CONCRETE HAD DETERIORATED TO THE CONSISTENCY OF LOOSELY CEMENTED GRAVEL; IN OTHER PLACES IT WAS PERFECTLY SOUND. AMONG REASONS FOR THE DETERIORATION WERE THE PRESENCE OF A MOISTURE-HOLDING SAND BLANKET OVER THE SLAB, LACK OF PROVISION FOR DRAINAGE IN THE DECK, USE OF DE-ICING CHEMICALS, AND OF LIMESTONE LARGE AGGREGATE. THE SOUND, OLD CONCRETE WAS PROTECTED IN ONE CASE BY A SEMI-LIQUID COATING OF CEMENT-LIME MORTAR, COATED WITH NEAT CEMENT MORTAR AND TWO COATS OF LIQUID ASPHALTUM. ALSO DESCRIBED ARE POSTENSIONED RODS WHICH WERE TIED AROUND THE OLD PIERS, AND THUS INSURE THE PIERS' INTEGRITY. /ASCE/
