ITALY WILL HEAT ITS HIGHWAYS IN ICY ALPINE REGIONS
TESTS WILL SOON START ALONG A 1/4-MILE STRETCH OF THE MONTJOVET PASS ON A SUPER HIGHWAY THAT LEADS TO 2 TUNNELS LINKING NORTHWEST ITALY TO FRANCE AND SWITZERLAND. PIPES WERE INSTALLED UNDER THE CONCRETE WHEN THE ROADBED WAS LAID. AN OIL BURNING PLANT WILL PUMP 95-DEGREE WATER THROUGH THE PIPES, AND ENGINEERS PREDICT THAT THIS WILL KEEP SNOW AND ICE MELTED IN ZERO WEATHER. WHILE THE COST OF PIPING EXISTING ROADS WOULD BE TOO EXPENSIVE, PLANNERS SAY THE SYSTEM COULD BE ADOPTED ON NEW ROADS OR HIGHWAYS BEING RESURFACED. /ARTICLE/
