SLURRY SEALS

SLURRY SEAL IS A WET-MIX SURFACE TREATMENT COMPOSED OF FINE GRADED AGGREGATE, EMULSIFIED ASPHALT, AND WATER. THE DEVELOPMENT OF SELF-PROPELLED, AUTOMATIC PLACEMENT MACHINES HAS REVIVED INTEREST IN THE SLURRY SEAL AS A SURFACE TREATMENT. SLURRY SEALS ARE ALSO USED FOR MULTI-COARSE SURFACES, AS TEMPORARY WEARING SURFACES IN STAGE CONSTRUCTION, AND AS PROTECTIVE SURFACING FOR BASES WHICH ARE TO BE COVERED WITH A HEAVIER TOP COURSE. THEY SERVE TO PROTECT PORTLAND CEMENT CONCRETE PAVEMENTS FROM DAMAGE BY DE-ICING SALTS AND ARREST SCALING AND DETERIORATION OF SUCH PAVEMENTS. SLURRY SEALS ARE INTENDED FOR USE ONLY ON STRUCTURALLY SOUND PAVEMENTS. IN GERMANY A TACK COAT IS USED UNDER SLURRY SEALS WITH CATIONIC EMULSIONS. EXPERIENCE HAS SHOWN THAT THIS ASSURES BETTER ADHESION OF THE SLURRY TO THE EXISTING SURFACE. SPECIFICATIONS, MATERIALS, DESIGN TESTS, AND SEAL APPLICATIONS ARE DESCRIBED.
