USE OF SONIC DEVICES FOR DETERMINING INTERNAL DECAY IN TIMBER
DESCRIBED ARE NONDESTRUCTIVE METHODS FOR DETECTING INTERNAL DECAY IN LARGE STRUCTURAL TIMBERS FOUND IN WOOD BRIDGES AND TRESTLES. THE TWO DEVICES TESTED OPERATE ON THE SAME PRINCIPLE, THAT IS, DECAYED OR HOLLOW PIECES WILL DIVERT AND DELAY THE SOUND WAVE, AND, HENCE, THE MEASURED TIME DELAY IS A FUNCTION OF THE INTERNAL CONDITION OF THE TIMBER. BOTH DEVICES GAVE A FAIRLY GOOD INDICATION AS TO WHETHER DECAY WAS PRESENT OR NOT. NEITHER ONE COULD INDICATE THE SIZE OF THE INTERNAL VOID. MOISTURE IN THE WOOD OR ON THE SURFACE HAD NO APPARENT EFFECT ON THE INSTRUMENT READINGS.
