THE ACTION OF DE-ICING SALTS AND STUDDED TIRES ON BITUMINOUS ROAD SURFACES (IN GERMAN)

DUE TO THE ENORMOUS INCREASE IN TRAFFIC AND AXLE LOADS SINCE 1960 CONSIDERABLE WINTER DAMAGE HAS OCCURRED ON THE GERMAN ROAD NETWORK THROUGH THE EFFECT OF DE-ICING SALTS AND STUDDED TIRES. DAMAGE STARTS WITH THE ELMINATION OF THE MORTAR; THE CHIPPINGS WHICH ARE LAID BARE BECAUSE OF THIS ARE BROKEN AWAY LATER, SO THAT FINALLY THERE IS A GREAT DEAL OF DAMAGE TO THE SURFACE. UP TO NOW NO KNOWLEDGE OF THE ACTION OF DE-ICING SALTS HAS EXISTED. SINCE IT WAS ESTABLISHED IN A TEST PROGRAM UNDERTAKEN BY THE WORKING COMMITTEE, "WINTER DAMAGE", OF THE ASPHALT-UND-TEERSTRASSEN AG, FORSCHUNGSGESELLSCHAFT FUR DAS STRASSENWESEN, THAT NEITHER BITUMINOUS BINDERS NOR AGGREGATES ARE ATTACKED BY CONCENTRATED SOLUTIONS OF DE-ICING SALT, AND THAT LIKEWISE THE ADHESION-BETWEEN BINDER AND MINERAL IS UNIMPAIRED, THE CONSTANT RETENTION OF WATER ON THE SURFACE DUE TO THE SALTS UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF THE MELTING POINT DEPRESSION CAN BE REGARDED AS THE CAUSE OF THE DAMAGE TO THE SURFACING. THE HARMFUL EFFECT OF STUDDED TIRES WAS CONFIRMED BY INVESTIGATIONS MADE BY PROFESSOR WEHNER AND THE WORKING COMMITTEE. A MODERATE DECREASE IN THE PROPORTION OF CHIPPINGS AND IN THE PARTICLE SIZE OF THE CHIPPINGS, A RICHER FILLER AND BINDER CONTENT AND GOOD COMPACTION ARE THE RECOMMENDED METHODS FOR COUNTERACTING WINTER DAMAGE, REFERENCE BEING MADE TO THE USE OF RUBBER-TIRED ROLLERS DURING COMPACTION. /FG/RRL/
