RESEARCH WORK ON MAGNESIUM CHLORIDE SOLUTION USED IN WINTER SERVICE ON ROADS (IN GERMAN)

AN EXAMINATION IS MADE OF THE INFLUENCE OF MAGNESIUM CHLORIDE LYE, WHEN DISTRIBUTED BY SPRINKLER TRUCKS, ON ROADS, VEHICLES, LIGHT ALLOYS, DRINKING WATER AND LEATHER. IT WAS OBSERVED THAT CONCRETE SURFACES WERE ONLY SLIGHTLY AFFECTED, AND THAT THE SOLUTION IS LESS HARMFUL THAN GRANULATED SALT. MEASUREMENTS TO ESTABLISH ALTERATIONS IN THE TIRE-ROAD-ADHESION COEFFICIENT SHOWED THAT VALUES ADEQUATE FOR TRAFFIC SAFETY CAN BE OBTAINED. OF COURSE LOW COEFFICIENTS OF FRICTION OCCURRED WHEN THERE WAS SLUSH ON THE ROAD. THE TESTS TO ESTABLISH THE BEARING CAPACITY RATIO OF THE ROAD FOUNDATION AND THE CORROSIVE EFFECT ON VEHICLES WERE PARTICULARLY SIGNIFICANT. THE USE OF MAGNESIUM CHLORIDE SOLUTION DOES NOT ADVERSELY AFFECT THE BEARING CAPACITY OF A ROAD FOUNDATION. HOWEVER ITS GREATEST FAULT IS ITS CORROSIVE ACTION ON VEHICLES COMPARED WITH OTHER CHEMICALS USED. THE TESTS ARE BEING CONTINUED. /FG/RRL/
