RESTORING SALT-DAMAGED HIGHWAY BRIDGES
ON THE NEW YORK THRUWAY, TO PROVIDE FREEZE-THAW PROTECTION TO BRIDGES, BOILED LINSEED OIL AND MINERAL SPIRITS ARE SPRAYED ON CURBS, WALKS, FASCIAE AND PYLONS. THE SIDES OF PIER CAPS ARE PROTECTED WITH A MIXTURE OF VAPOR BARRIER SEAL (GILSONITE ASPHALT) AND PENETROL (A HIGH-SOLIDS WETTING AGENT). THE TOPS OF PIER CAPS ARE PROTECTED WITH SUMMER- GRADE ROOFING MASTIC AND FIBERGLASS CLOTH. TO PROTECT BRIDGE DECKS, A LAYER OF EMULSION IS SPREAD, THEN A LAYER OF FIBERGLASS CLOTH, THEN A SECOND EMULSION LAYER, THEN A 4-IN. ASPHALTIC WEARING COURSE. (ON THE BRIDGE DECKS OF SOME OTHER TOLLWAYS, THE IMPERMEABLE MEMBRANE IS COAL-TAR AND EPOXY.) LIGHTWEIGHT AGGREGATE HAS PROVEN SUPERIOR IN FREEZE-THAW RESISTANCE. /ASCE/
