EVALUATION OF ZINC SURFACES FOR COATING INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION LINE PRODUCTS
THIS STUDY INCLUDED REGULAR BRIGHT SPANGLE, MINIMIZED SPANGLE, EXTRA SMOOTH, GALVANNEALED AND ELECTROGALVANIZED STEEL. SOME SUBSTRATES WERE CHEMICALLY TREATED AT THE STEEL MILL TO IMPROVE PAINT ADHESION. OTHERS RECEIVED EITHER PHOSPHATE, CHROMATE, WASH PRIMER OR NO TREATMENT. THE BAKED COATINGS SYSTEMS APPLIED IN THIS EVALUATION WERE EPOXY ESTER, THERMOSETTING ACRYLIC, ALKYD-AMINO AND VINYL. TESTS USED WERE EXTERIOR EXPOSURE, SALT FOG, WATER IMMERSION, HUMIDITY, IMPACT, CROSS HATCH ADHESION, LOCK SEAM AND BEAD FABRICATION. GALVANNEALED STEEL OUTPERFORMED OTHER SUBSTRATES IN MOST SYSTEMS, HOWEVER, CERTAIN TYPES OF GALVANIZED STEEL PERFORMED WELL IN SPECIFIC TESTS. SOME PANELS FAILED BY LOSS OF ADHESION ON TWO YEAR EXPOSURE IN WISCONSIN. PREDOMINANT FAILURE WAS AT THE EDGES. /AUTHOR/
