MAINTAINING LARGE CULVERTS IN THE ARCTIC

AT CAMP TUTO, GREENLAND, SEVERAL METHODS HAVE BEEN TRIED TO BREAK THE ICE IN A CULVERT WHICH IS USED TO CARRY OFF THE MELT STREAM FROM A LAKE. EXPLOSIVES, BORING A HOLE THROUGH THE ICE WITH A JET OF STEAM, AND TUNNELING WITH AN ELECTRIC CHAIN SAW WERE ATTEMPTED AS MEANS OF BREAKING THE ICE BUT THESE METHODS WERE NOT USEFUL. A METHOD THAT WAS SUCCESSFUL CONSISTED OF A MINERALLY INSULATED HEATING CABLE PROTECTED BY A ONE INCH STEEL PIPE WHICH WAS PLACED WITHIN THE CULVERT AND ATTACHED TO A GENERATOR. THE GENERATOR WAS OPERATED UNTIL THE WATER FLOWED THROUGH THE CULVERT.
