HORIZONTAL REPETITIVE LOADS ON VERTICAL PILES

EFFORTS REPETITIFS HORIZONTAUX SUR PIEUX VERTICAUX

THE BEHAVIOUR OF VERTICAL PILES SUBJECTED TO HORIZONTAL STRESSES IS NOT CLEARLY KNOWN AND HAS GIVEN RISE TO THE ESTABLISHMENT OF DESIGN METHODS WHICH ARE ALL BASED ON SIMPLIFYING HYPOTHESES BUT WHICH ARE BADLY ADAPTED TO REPETITIVE LOADING. THIS ARTICLE PRESENTS THE FIRST RESULTS OF A STUDY, WHICH FOLLOWED FULL-SCALE TESTS. STATIC TESTS SHOWED THE INFLUENCE OF THE LOADING RATE AND THE POSSIBILITY OF EXPRESSING LOGARITHMICALLY PERMISSIBLE LOADS AS A FUNCTION OF LOAD APPLICATION RATE. REPETITIVE TESTS ENABLED (1) CONCLUSIONS TO BE DRAWN ON THE EVOLUTION IN THE HORIZONTAL DISPLACEMENTS OF PILE HEADS ACCORDING TO THE NATURE AND NUMBER OF LOADING CYCLES, AND (2) THE DAMPING COEFFICIENT OF THE SYSTEM TO BE CALCULATED. A SHORT INVESTIGATION, IN WHICH REPETITIVE HORIZONTAL STRESSES AND IN PARTICULAR SEISMIC STRESSES WERE USED SHOWED THE IMPORTANCE OF THE RESISTANCE OF THE SOIL TO SHOCKS (SHEAR OF ALLUVIAL LAYERS) AND EVENTUALLY THE LIQUEFACTION OF SAND AND SOFTENING OF CLAY.
