SULFUR DIOXIDE REMOVAL FROM STACK GASES
BECAUSE ABOUT 46% OF SULFUR OXIDE SMOKESTACK EMISSION COME FROM ELECTRIC POWER PLANTS, MUCH REMEDIAL ACTION IS AIMED AT POWER FACILITIES. THREE GENERAL STRATEGIES ARE CONSIDERED: (1) REPLACING FOSSIL FUELS WITH NUCLEAR FUELS; (2) BURNINNG ONLY LOW-SULFUR FUELS; AND (3) REMOVING THE SULFUR OXIDES FROM THE GASEOUS EMISSIONS OF THE STACK. THE LAST IS CONSIDERED MOST FEASIBLE, AND METHODS OF REMOVAL THROUGH CHEMICAL REACTION WITH ALKALINE MATERIALS ARE DISCUSSED. THESE INCLUDE LIMESTONE INJECTION, REACTIONS WITH AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS, DRY CHEMICALS, AND MOLTEN MATERIALS, ACTIVATED CARBON ADSORPTION, CATALYTIC OXIDATION, AND CATALYTIC REDUCTION. THE ECONOMICS OF THE SYSTEMS AND THEIR ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES ARE DISCUSSED.
