BOND AND TENSILE CAPACITY OF LIGHTWEIGHT AGGREGATES

THE TENSILE CAPACITY OF SELECTED STRUCTURAL LIGHTWEIGHT AGGREGATES WAS INVESTIGATED, ALONG WITH THE CEMENT PASTE- AGGREGATE BOND CAPACITY IN SHEAR AND TENSION. A DEVICE WAS DEVELOPED TO EVALUATE AN INDIVIDUAL AGGREGATES TENSILE CAPACITY AND BOND CAPACITY TO CEMENT PASTE. USING THIS DEVICE, SEVEN LIGHTWEIGHT AGGREGATE TYPES WERE TESTED AND THE FOLLOWING RESULTS OBTAINED. THE TENSILE CAPACITY OF THE LIGHTWEIGHT AGGREGATES TESTED WAS VERY LOW, GENERALLY LESS THAN THE AGGREGATE-CEMENT PASTE BOND STRENGTH, REGARDLESS OF AGGREGATE SURFACE TEXTURE. THE HIGHER THE BULK SPECIFIC GRAVITY OF THE LIGHTWEIGHT AGGREGATE, THE HIGHER THE TENSILE STRENGTH OF THE AGGREGATE. WITHIN THE RANGE OF CEMENT PASTE STRENGTHS INVESTIGATED, THE PASTE STRENGTH HAD NO INFLUENCE ON THE AGGREGATE-CEMENT PASTE BOND STRENGTH. /AUTHOR/
