CONTROL OF HEAVY MEDIA PLANTS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF GRAVEL AGGREGATE

THE HEAVY MEDIA BENEFICIATION OF GRAVELS FOR PRODUCTION OF COARSE AGGREGATE REQUIRES A SHARP SEPARATION TO REALIZE SATISFACTORY YIELD AND QUALITY OF PRODUCT. SOME OF THE RESULTS OF A THREE-YEAR STUDY TO DEVELOP AND DEMONSTRATE PLANT CONTROLS THAT OPTIMIZE SEPARATION EFFICIENCY AND QUALITY OF PRODUCT ARE PRESENTED. SEVERAL HEAVY MEDIA SEPARATION PLANTS IN MICHIGAN WERE SURVEYED TO OBSERVE PRACTICES, EVALUATE PERFORMANCE, AND OBTAIN SAMPLES FOR PILOT PLANT TESTS. THE SAMPLES WERE PICKED TO SEPARATE THE SOUND AND DELETERIOUS GRAVELS, AND THEIR SPECIFIC GRAVITY COMPOSITIONS WERE DETERMINED BY HEAVY LIQUIDS. PARTICLE SIZE AND SHAPE MEASUREMENTS WERE ALSO MADE. THE EFFECT OF A CLAY CONTAMINANT UPON THE APPARENT VISCOSITY, OR CONSISTENCY, AND THE STABILITY OF FERROSILICON-MAGNETITE MEDIUMS, SUCH AS ARE USED IN THE PLANTS, WAS DETERMINED. PILOT TESTS WERE MADE IN A THREE-FOOT CONE VESSEL WITH THE MEDIUM SPECIFIC GRAVITY, CONSISTENCY, AND CIRCULATION AUTOMATICALLY MEASURED AND RECORDED. THE TESTS WERE MADE UNDER VARIOUS CONDITIONS OF SPECIFIC GRAVITY, CONSISTENCY, AND STABILITY OF THE MEDIUM. THE SAME FEED SAMPLE OF KNOW COMPOSITION BY SPECIFIC GRAVITY AND TYPES OF GRAVELS WAS USED IN ALL TESTS. THESE TESTS DEMONSTRATED THAT EFFICIENT PLANT CONTROL CAN BE MAINTAINED BY CONTINUOUS MONITORING OF THE SPECIFIC GRAVITY AND CONSISTENCY OF THE MEDIUM AND THAT PRODUCT YIELD CAN BE MAXIMIZED FOR A DISIGNATED QUALITY OF PRODUCT. THE EFFECTS OF GRAVEL FEED CHARACTERISTICS AND MEDIUM CONDITIONS UPON SEPARATION EFFICIENCY, PRODUCT YIELD, AND QUALITY ARE DISCUSSED, AND METHODS OF PROCESS CONTROL ARE DESCRIBED. /AUTHOR/
