GLASS ROADS? THEY'RE WORKING ON IT

EXPERIMENTS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI AT ROLLA ARE TESTING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING CRUSHED GLASS AS A SUBSTITUTE FOR LIMESTONE AND GRAVEL IN A BITUMINOUS SURFACING MIXTURE. THE PROBLEM OF DISPOSING OF TONS OF GLASS BOTTLES DUMPED IN TRASH BINS OVER THE NATION EVERY DAY LED TO THE IDEA. SEVERAL HUNDRED SOFT DRINK BOTTLES WERE CRUSHED, THE FRAGMENTS THEN ADDED TO THE ASPHALT. A UNIVERSITY PARKING LOT SERVED AS LOCATION FOR A PATCH TEST WHICH WAS OBSERVED THROUGHT LAST WINTER. RESULTS HVE BEEN GOOD. THE PATCH STOOD UP WELL AND THERE WAS NO HARM TO TIRES. FURTHER EXPERIMENTATION WILL BE CONDUCTED. RESEARCHERS HOPE TO LAY A 600-FOOT LONG STRIP, 20 FEET WIDE, OF THE MIXTURE ON CAMPUS FOR FURTHER TESTING. /AUTHOR/
