EVALUATION TECHNIQUES FOR STRUCTURAL QUALITY SYNTHETIC AGGREGATES

SYNTHETIC AGGREGATES, PRODUCED BY FIRING CLAYS, SHALES, AND SLATES, ARE BEING USED EXTENSIVELY. SELECTED PROPERTIES OF TWO SYNTHETIC AGGREGATES WERE DETERMINED, AND THEIR VARIATIONS WERE ANALYZED WITH FIRING TEMPERATURE. TWO SHALES WERE FIRED IN A FURNACE AT VARIOUS TEMPERATURES BETWEEN 1200 AND 2400 F, AND THE AGGREGATES PRODUCED WERE EVALUATED BY DETERMINING BULK SPECIFIC GRAVITY, WATER ABSORPTION, MICROSTRUCTURE, RESISTANCE TO FREEZE-THAW AND ABRASION, COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH, AND MODULUS OF ELASTICITY. A PRIMARY FINDING WAS THAT THESE PROPERTIES, WHEN COMPARED WITH FIRING TEMPERATURE, GAVE A BASIS FOR EVALUATING THE QUALITY OF SYNTHETIC AGGREGATES. /AUTHOR/
