THE POLISHING OF ROAD STONES /DUTCH/
THE CONDITIONS WHICH INFLUENCE POLISHING OF ROADSTONES IN BITUMINOUS PAVEMENTS ARE DISCUSSED. THE ACTION OF WEATHERING ON THE FRICTION COEFFICIENT OF TEST PANELS PREPARED WITH DIFFERENT KINDS OF STONE CHIPPINGS IS DESCRIBED. IT HAS BEEN CONCLUDED THAT, IN THE MAJORITY OF CASES, THE WEATHERING INFLUENCE ON POLISHING IS AN INDIRECT ONE. SINCE THE 'POLISHING STONE VALUE' OBTAINED BY THE ROAD RESEARCH LABORATORY METHOD HAS BEEN FOUND TO SHOW A FAIRLY GOOD CORRELATION WITH THE RESISTANCE TO POLISHING IN PRACTICE, A GREAT NUMBER OF VARIOUS ROADSTONES USED IN THE NETHERLANDS WERE TESTED ACCORDING TO THIS METHOD. THE 'POLISHING STONE VALUE' OF WELL PERFORMING MATERIALS IS, IN GENERAL, SUPERIOR TO 50. STONES OF A HETEROGENEOUS COMPOSITION PERFORMED BETTER THAN HOMOGENEOUS STONES OF A LOW OR MEDIUM HARDNESS. FINALLY SOME PROMISING RESULTS OBTAINED WITH CALCINED STONES AND ARTIFICIAL CONGLOMERATES ARE MENTIONED. /RRL/SWOV/
