EFFECTIVENESS OF MINERAL ADMIXTURES IN PREVENTING EXCESSIVE EXPANSION OF CONCRETE DUE TO ALKALI-AGGREGATE REACTION

USING BOTH CHEMICAL AND MORTAR TEST METHODS, 20 MATERIALS FROM 8 CLASSES OF MINERAL ADMIXTURES WERE TESTED FOR THEIR EFFECTIVENESS IN PREVENTING CONCRETE EXPANSION DUE TO ALKALI AGGREGATE REACTION. ALL THE MATERIALS TESTED SHOWED THAT, WITH SUFFICIENT AMOUNTS, EXPANSION DUE TO ALKALI-AGGREGATE REACTION WOULD BE EFFECTIVELY REDUCED. CHEMICAL TESTS PROVED TO BE INADEQUATE IN EVALUATING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF AN ADMIXTURE IN PREVENTING CONCRETE EXPANSION.
