SYNTHETIC AGGREGATES
A STUDY WAS CONDUCTED ON SYNTHETIC AGGREGATES TO DETERMINE THEIR PROPERTIES SO THAT HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT ENGINEERS CAN WRITE NECESSARY SPECIFICATIONS FOR CONSTRUCTION. STUDY WAS MADE OF THE PERFORMANCE OF CONCRETE MADE FROM VARIOUS SYNTHETIC COARSE AGGREGATES, PRODUCED COMMERCIALLY AND IN A PILOT KILN. THE COMPOSITION AND PROPERTIES OF THE AGGREGATES WERE STUDIED TO DETERMINE THE RELATION OF THESE PROPERTIES TO THE PERFORMANCE OF CONCRETE. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS PERMITTED A RECOMMENDED SYNTHETIC COARSE AGGREGATE CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM. IN THIS SYSTEM, SYNTHETIC COARSE AGGREGATES ARE DIVIDED INTO TWO GROUPS, BLOATED AND NONBLOATED. EACH GROUP IS FURTHER DIVIDED INTO THREE GROUPS, BASED UPON QUALITY. THE CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM CONTAINS A FUNCTIONAL GROUPING, BASED ON INTENDED USE. THE STUDIES ALSO RELATE AGGREGATE PROPERTIES TO DURABILITY OF CONCRETE MADE WITH THE AGGREGATE AGAINST FREEZING AND THAWING.
