THE USE OF BLAST FURNACE SLAG IN ROADMAKING
NOWADAYS, WHEN THE USE OF GRAVEL TREATED WITH BLAST FURNACE SLAG IS EXTENDING BEYOND THE LOCALITY WHERE IT IS PRODUCED, IT APPEARS NECESSARY TO PRESENT THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THIS NEW TREATMENT IN SYNTHETIC FORM. THE ARTICLE DESCRIBES IN GREAT DETAIL THE SPECIFICATIONS TO BE LAID DOWN FOR THE AGGREGATES, THE SLAG, AND THE CATALYST. GREAT EMPHASIS IS LAID ON THE CONDITIONS OF APPLICATION. THE AIM IS TO AVOID THE EXTENSION OF GRANULATED SLAG TREATMENT LEADING, AS UNFORTUNATELY IS OFTEN THE CASE, TO SOMETIMES SERIOUS FAILURES DUE TO ERRORS OF INTERPRETATION OR OF EXTRAPOLATION IN RESPECT TO ITS COMPONENTS. THOUGH IT IS DIFFICULT TO OBTAIN SERVILE IMITATION ON THE PART OF ENGINEERS, TOO MUCH LIBERTY MUST NOT BE TAKEN WITH THE QUALITIES JUDGED NECESSARY, AS SET FORTH IN THIS ARTICLE. THE HOMOGENEITY AND COMPACTNESS OF SLAG-GRAVEL, AS OF OTHER AGGREGATES BOUND WITH CEMENT OR BITUMEN, ARE ESSENTIAL PROPERTIES WHERE THE LONGEVITY OF PAVEMENTS IS CONCERNED. AND IT SEEMS POINTLESS TO AIM TO DETERMINE WITH ACCURACY THE THICKNESSES NECESSARY WITHOUT PAYING ATTENTION TO THE QUALITY OF THE MATERIALS USED. WHATEVER THE COLOUR OF THE BINDER, THE COEFFICIENTS OF EQUIVALENTS OF THICKNESS MAY VARY FROM 1 TO 3, DEPENDING ON THE HOMOGENEITY AND COMPACTNESS OF THE MIXTURES. IT IS, THEREFORE, PREFERABLE FOR ENGINEERS AND CONTRACTORS TO COMBINE THEIR EFFORTS TO ACHIEVE SLAG-GRAVEL OF HIGH CHARACTERISTICS BY CONFORMING AS CLOSELY AS POSSIBLE TO THE IMPERATIVES OF QUALITY LAID DOWN. /AUTHOR/
