CLASSIFYING SAND BY ELUTRIATION
THE PRINCIPLE THAT THE VELOCITY AT WHICH A SOLID PARTICLE SETTLES WHEN PLACED IN WATER DEPENDS ON THE SIZE, AND WEIGHT OF THAT PARTICLE HAS BEEN USED IN VARIOUS WAYS FOR CLASSIFYING PARTICULATE MATERIALS. A RECENTLY INTRODUCED LARGE-SCALE SAND CLASSIFIER ADOPTS THIS PRINCIPLE WHICH WAS ORIGINALLY APPLIED BY A. LOVEGREEN OF THE HYDRAULICS RESEARCH STATION TO THE DESIGN OF AN ELUTRIATOR. THIS PAPER DESCRIBES INSTALLATIONS IN GRAVEL WORKINGS AT WHISBY NEAR LINCOLN AND BRANDON NEAR COVENTRY.
