CORRELATION BETWEEN PARTICLE SHAPE AND SURFACE TEXTURE OF FINE AGGREGATES AND THEIR WATER REQUIREMENT
THE ORIFICE METHOD OF MEASURING SURFACE TEXTURE AND PARTICLE SHAPE OF SAND MEASURES THE TIME FOR A SPECIFIED AMOUNT OF ONE-SIZE FRACTION OF SAND TO RUN THROUGH A 3/8 IN. ORIFICE. THIS TIME IS COMPARED WITH THAT OF STANDARD OTTAWA SAND AND EXPRESSED AS THE TIME INDEX. THE TIME INDEXES OF SEVERAL NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL SANDS ARE CORRELATED WITH THE FLOW CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SANDS AS MEASURED BY A MODIFIED MORTAR FLOW TEST. IT IS SHOWN THAT THE ORIFICE METHOD PREDICTS THE WATER REQUIREMENTS OF SANDS AS MEASURED BY THE MORTAR FLOW TEST. /NAPA/
