PROCESS OPENS DOOR TO SPOTWELDING

AWARD OF A NASA CONTRACT FOR SPOTWELD-ADHESIVE BONDED SPACECRAFT SHROUDS MAY BE THE OPENING WEDGE IN EVENTUAL WIDESPREAD USE OF THIS NEW STRUCTURAL TECHNIQUE IN MANY INDUSTRIES BESIDES AEROSPACE. THE TECHNIQUE MARRIES SPOTWELDING AND ADHESIVE BONDING. TESTS ON SAMPLE ASSEMBLIES INDICATED MAJOR GAINS IN JOINT MECHANICAL PROPERTIES COMPARED TO USING EITHER TECHNIQUE ALONE. IN ADDITION, STUDIES SHOW MAJOR IMPROVEMENTS COMPARED TO RIVETED JOINTS FOR THE SAME APPLICATIONS. AMONG THE GAINS FOR WELD-BONDED JOINTS COMPARED TO RIVETED SYSTEMS ARE A 30% INCREASE IN AXIAL-LOAD FATIGUE STRENGTH, 1200% INCREASE IN SONIC FATIGUE AND 35% REDUCTION IN WEIGHT. FATIGUE PROPERTIES ARE IMPRESSIVE COMPARED TO SPOTWELDS. THE POTENTIAL PROPERTY IMPROVEMENTS ARE SUCH THAT SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF THE NASA WORK COULD LEAD TO USE OF WELD BONDING IN MANY OTHER APPLICATIONS SUCH AS ASSEMBLY OF BUSES, RAILROAD CARS, AND OTHER VEHICLES. /AUTHOR/
