USE OF NATURAL LATEX IN ROAD CONSTRUCTION
LATEX IS THE MOST EFFECTIVE FORM OF NATURAL RUBBER FOR ROAD CONSTRUCTION, BOTH CENTRIFUGED LATEX AND REVERTEX BEING USED. CREAMED SKIM LATEX IS MOST EFFECTIVE FOR ROAD-MAKING, BUT FIELD LATEX IS MORE SUITABLE FOR ROAD-MAKING IN THE NATURAL RUBBER-PRODUCING COUNTRIES. RESULTS OF LABORATORY STUDIES ON CATIONICALLY STABILIZED, COMPOUNDED, AND PEROXIDE-VULCANIZED FIELD LATEX ARE REPORTED. THE DISPERSION OF RUBBER PARTICLES, TEMPERATURE-DEPENDENT AND RHEOLOGICAL PROPERTIES, AGING AND STRIPPING OF RUBBERIZED BITUMEN, AND USES OF RUBBER IN MIX DESIGNS WERE STUDIED. EXPERIMENTAL STRETCHES OF ROAD SURFACING WERE LAID WITH BITUMEN CONTAINING UP TO 4% FIELD LATEX. FURTHER TEST STRETCHES ARE BEING LAID WITH RUBBER-MODIFIED PREMIX USING FIELD AND CREAMED SKIM LATEXES. /AUTHOR/
