EXPERIENCES RELATING TO USE OF EPOXY RESINS FOR PROTECTION AND REPAIR OF DAMAGED CONCRETE EDGE BEAMS OF BRIDGES /IN SWEDISH/
THE NATIONAL SWEDISH ROAD BOARD HAS CARRIED OUT AN EXTENSIVE REPAIR PROGRAM ON BRIDGES WHICH WERE BUILT IN 1959 AND 1960. AFTER A FEW WINTERS, THE EDGE BEAMS EXHIBITED CONSIDERABLE SCALING, AND PARTS OF THESE BEAMS HAD TO BE REPAIRED BY APPLYING NEW CONCRETE OR MORTAR. IT WAS DECIDED THAT THE UNDAMAGED OR SLIGHTLY DAMAGED PARTS OF THE EDGE BEAMS SHOULD BE PROTECTED AGAINST FURTHER ATTACK BY FROST AND SALT. THIS ARTICLE DESCRIBES THE VARIOUS RESINS UTILIZED FOR THIS PURPOSE, AS WELL AS THE METHODS OF REPAIR, AND THE PROCEDURES EMPLOYED. UNSATISFACTORY RESULTS CAN BE ATTRIBUTED TO THE FACT THAT THE OLD CONCRETE WAS TOO PERMEABLE, AND THEREFORE PERMITTED MIGRATION OF MOISTURE. THE COATINGS, WHICH WERE RELATIVELY IMPERMEABLE AND BRITTLE, PREVENTED THE EVAPORATION OF MOISTURE FROM THE CONCRETE, AND THE BOND WAS DESTROYED BY FREEZING OF THE WATER. THE BEST RESULTS WERE OBTAINED BY USING THE METHOD IN WHICH A LAYER OF CONCRETE WAS FIRST REMOVED FROM BOTH THE TOP FACE AND THE EXTERIOR FACE OF THE EDGE BEAM; CONCRETE SURFACES WERE COATED WITH EPOXY RESIN ADHESIVE, AND NEW CONCRETE OR CEMENT MORTAR WAS APPLIED BEFORE THE ADHESIVE HARDENED.
